Design Of Death is a comedy at heart and while not always apparent from the story itself, the film uses its soundtrack to remove all remaining doubts. On top of that, it also features some truly spectacular music, especially near the end of the film. It nice to see some Chinese directors finally breaking free from safe and traditional soundtracks.
Film Review: Design of Death. Southwest China, the early 1940s. In the mountain roads near the remote township of Long Life, a man, Niu Jieshi (Huang Bo), is beaten in a sack and tossed into a gorge. Miraculously still alive, he's rescued by two men on a motorbike, including a doctor (Simon Yam).
Design for Death is a 1947 American documentary film that won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. It was based on a shorter U.S. Army training film, Our Job in Japan, that had been produced in 1945–1946 for the soldiers occupying Japan after World War II. Both films dealt with Japanese culture and the origins of the war.
Death by Design is a simple no-nonsense film, but neatly edited with elegant graphics. It's essentially an instructional film about a subject that it's urgent to know about. The message is we must all be more aware and more responsible. And consider looking for green devices next time and not replace them so often.
